We've all been there before; you or a friend have a nice chunk or cannabis flower at your disposal, but you don't have a hash grinder like the ZenPen® at your disposal. What are you doing? It is not ideal to use unground weed, as you will end up burning more weed than you smoke, and putting unground weed in a rolling paper or blunt wrap will not work as it is impossible to get an even burn. In such a case, the only solution is to find a do-it-yourself method to grind your flour.
Ways to Grind Weed Without a Grinder
If you find yourself stuck without a grinder, here are a few ways to grind weed without a grinder.
General kitchen appliances that can be used
When you're at home, your kitchen should probably be the first place to check. Many household kitchen appliances can also serve as a weed grinder in no time. If you look closely enough, you can probably find something that works. Some common examples are:
Coffee grinder
As the name suggests, a coffee grinder is still a grinder when it comes down to it. First of all, make sure you thoroughly clean your coffee grinder from any leftovers coffee grounds or coffee bean scraps (unless you like to smoke coffee with your weed).
Make sure to wrap the weed loosely so you don't damage and grind your grinder. Also, make sure to clean your coffee grinder after you're done, unless you want your morning coffee to get an extra kick tomorrow.
Cheese grater
This method may take a little more effort, but it is just as effective. Make sure your grater is clean, put a plate or container underneath and start grating. Pay close attention to your fingers as you grate and check for any buds still sticking to the teeth of the grater when you're done.
Mortar and pestle
If you don't have coffee grinders and cheese graters at your disposal, it might be time for the classics. If you have a mortar and pestle to use, you will probably want to let your weed sit for a few hours to dry it a bit and make grinding easier. After that, make sure your mortar and pestle are clean and pulverize everything. Make sure you don't go in too hard.
Cutting board and knife
This may be a more laborious method than some of the others, but it is no less effective. If you don't have any of the other devices or resources above such as one grinder have at your disposal, a cutting board and a knife will still be able to produce results in no time. Make sure your knife is sharp and get started with your treats.
Shot glass and scissors
Maybe you are at a party and the host does not have luxury items such as a fancy 'cutting board' or 'knife'. Chances are, there are still a few shot glasses available and scissors stashed somewhere, and that's all you really need.
Put your buds in a (clean - we can't stress that enough) shot glass and start cutting it into it. If all shot glasses are currently in use as there are six different drinking games going on, you can also just slice your buds on a plate.
Medicine box and coins
You might say, “That's all fine and dandy, but what if I'm out of the house? What about the enthusiast on the go? Buddy, we have a tip for you too. If you have some change and a medicine box or bottle of your prescription with you, you have a DIY shaker. Currency is notorious for carrying germs, so you'll probably want to wipe the coins with a disinfectant wipe before getting started.
Put a few buds in the bottle or similar container (make sure not to put too much in, you want to leave some space), drop some coins (nickels or quarters are best), tighten the cap and start shake. Check your progress to the desired result about every 20 seconds.
Just pick it apart
If all else fails, you should still have the fingers you were blessed with from birth. If you really don't have anything else to use, the proven method of separating buds by hand will never let you down.
It may take a little more time than the other methods, but that should also give you plenty of time to think about how useful it would be to have a grinder to buy.
